Sessions, fees & questions

Know what to expect from your hypnotherapy session

Starting something unfamiliar is easier when the practical details are clear. Here is what happens in a first session, what the current fees are and the questions you may want answered before booking.

A little clarity before you begin

Before your appointment

Get in touch with a brief outline of what you would like help with and whether you prefer an in-person or online session. We can discuss suitability, location or format, and the arrangements for an appointment.

Your first session

We begin with an intake form and a conversation about what has brought you here and what you hope to work towards. There is time to ask questions and discuss the approach.

The session then moves into guided hypnosis and suggestions linked to the work we have discussed, followed by a gradual return to your usual awareness. A standard session is approximately one hour.

Recorded hypnosis audio may also be part of our work. Ask how recordings may be used in your sessions and what would be provided for you to listen to afterwards.

Your questions, answered

It’s okay
to ask.

You do not need to pretend to feel certain in order to ask questions.

Ask Ian a question
Will I be in control?

Yes. During hypnosis you retain control and do not have to accept suggestions you do not want. You can speak or stop. This is different from the entertainment people may associate with stage hypnosis.

What if I feel nervous or sceptical?

You can bring those concerns to the first conversation. Ask what the session involves and explain anything you are uncomfortable with. You do not need to pretend to feel certain in order to ask questions.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the concern, your goals and whether the approach is suitable for you. My weight-loss programme consists of six sessions; the smoking-cessation offer is one session. These are descriptions of the offers, rather than promises of a particular result or timescale for everyone.

Can you guarantee it will work?

No. People respond differently and a specific outcome cannot be guaranteed. We can discuss what you hope to achieve and the approach before you decide to arrange a session.

Can I have hypnotherapy online?

Yes, online hypnotherapy is available. Let me know where you will be joining from so we can discuss suitability, timing and practical arrangements. A quiet, private place with a reliable connection is a useful starting point.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

No. Tell me about relevant health conditions and any care you are receiving before arranging a session. Some conditions require advice from a healthcare professional first. Hypnotherapy should not replace necessary medical care or lead you to stop prescribed treatment.

Can I enquire for someone else?

Yes. You can ask about the service for someone you support, including a child or young person. Please keep the first message brief; suitability, consent and any additional arrangements need to be discussed before a session is agreed.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Confidentiality and its limits are matters to discuss before a session. Please ask how information and any recordings would be handled, and read the privacy information before sending sensitive details.

How do I pay, cancel or rearrange?

Please ask about payment and cancellation arrangements when enquiring, so you understand the terms before confirming an appointment.

A first step, at your pace
